EUROBANK EFG Invests in Education - Syros

In the context of the events organized by Eurobank EFG to reward the best students from all Greek high schools who obtained the highest grades for admission to tertiary education, the 5th award ceremony was held in Syros.

The sponsorship programme, "The Great Moment for Education”, which was launched by Eurobank EFG in 2003, is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Education and is one of the most important sponsorship initiatives of the Eurobank EFG Group that has chosen to be actively involved within the community by lending its support to the fields of Education, Culture, Environment and Sports. Through this programme, awards have been given until today to 4,000 students in Greece who have obtained the highest marks and who are the most vibrant message of progress for our society.

The main aim of the “The Great Moment for Education” programme is to reward young people's efforts in their pursuit of knowledge and to recognize those who have achieved excellence and who represent a prospect and guarantee for the future.

Eurobank EFG wishes by means of these symbolic awards to promote the timeless significance of the values that inspire and guide young people as they strive for a worthy future marked by creativity and innovative thinking.

In the context of the programme, which concerns over 230,000 pupils graduating from senior high school throughout Greece, Eurobank EFG rewards each year the pupi1s who achieved the highest marks for admission to tertiary education in each of the 1,300 high schools in Greece, public and private, daily or evening.

The award is accompanied by the amount of € 1,000, which is deposited in a savings account at a Eurobank EFG branch in the relevant city.

The following dignitaries honored the event with their presence: Cyclades MP Ioannis Homatas, the Catholic Bishop of Syros, Thera and Crete Frangiskos, the representative of the Metropolitan of Syros, Tinos, Andros, Kea and Milos, the Sub-prefect of Kea Stefanos Lepouras, the Cyclades Regional Councilor Elias Gaviotis, the Mayor of Poseidonia Dimitrios Roussos, the Deputy Mayor of Ermoupolis Dimitrios Gryparis, the President of the Ermoupolis Municipal Council Antonis Markoulis, Ermoupolis Municipal Councilors Ms. Anna Vafia and Dionysis Leontaritis, Spyridon Miliotis, Emmanuel Pavlos and other  representatives of local and regional government. The Regional Director of Primary and Secondary Education for the South Aegean Ms. Vasiliki Tea, the Director of Secondary Education for the region of the Cyclades Mihalis Fakorellis, the Head of the Cyclades Physical Education Department Ms. Sofia Pantelidou also attended the event at which the University of the Aegean was represented by Assistant Professor Nicolaos Sapidis, Department of Product and System Design Engineers. Also present at the ceremony were the Prosecutor of the Court of Appeal Ioannis Tzagournis, the 2nd Vice-President of the Cyclades Chamber Leonardos Roussos, the Commander of the Syros Navy Base Dionysis Giatras, the Syros Harbor-Master Leonidas Manolakos, as well as many members of the region’s economic and social life.  

Cyclades MP Ioannis Homatas, who took the floor first, congratulated Eurobank EFG for its sponsorship programme which is aimed at society’s most sensitive sector, Education and youth. MP Homatas commented that this is an extremely important programme that brings moral and material support to young people as they start on their professional career.

The Deputy Mayor of Ermoupolis, Dimitrios Griparis, noted that the Eurobank EFG awards not only recognize the school champions in knowledge, but their families as well and commended the Bank for its important initiative.

In his address, His Eminence Frangiskos, Catholic Bishop of Syros, Thera and Crete, congratulated the students for responding to their parents’ sacrifices by achieving excellence, the parents for standing by their children, the teachers because these awards attest to the quality of their teaching and Eurobank EFG for its sensitivity to Education.

The representative of His Eminence the Metropolitan of Syros, Tinos, Andros, Kea and Milos whotook the floor next, stressed that these awards recognize the students’ efforts and thanked Eurobank EFG for its initiative that shows that a financial organization is capable of social awareness.

Nicolaos Sapidis, Assistant Professor at the University of the Aegean, Department of Product and System Design Engineers, congratulated the Bank for giving emphasis to sectors such as the Environment, Education, Culture and Sports through its sponsorship programmes and wished the laureate students the best success for the future.

The Regional Primary and Secondary Education Director for the South Aegean region, Vasiliki Tea, expressed particular pleasure in seeing that the educational community has embraced Eurobank EFG programme, which is extremely important for Education and wished students a successful and creative future.

PASOK MP for the Cyclades Panagiotis Rigas and the Sub-prefects of Milos  Panagiota Kalogeraki and Paros Grigoria Protolati, sent messages of congratulations to the students, their parents and Eurobank EFG. 

An honorary plaque was given to the Milos Comprehensive School from which Iakovos Armenis, the student with the overall highest marks for admission to tertiary education in the Cyclades had graduated. On behalf of the school’s Headmistress Aristoula Karkabouna and teacher Ekaterini Vichou thanked Eurobank EFG for its on-going contribution to the educational community, noting that the teachers and students of Milos feel particularly proud to see that their efforts have yielded results.

Finally, in his short speech, Eurobank EFG Regional Manager Fotis Bakoyannis stressed that “responding to the challenges of the new era our Bank encourages youth to focus on learning and progress by introducing this institution. At a time when many of the traditional values, which underpinned the development of our society, are being questioned, we must recognize and reward the best, those who set objectives for themselves and choose the difficult path of strenuous effort in order to attain them”.
