Sofia BEKATOROU and Aimilia TSOULFA, Gold Medallists in sailing in the 470 Class at the 2004 Olympic Games, were announced for the second time as the winners of the ISAF World Sailor Award of the Year 2004.
It is worth noting that this is the first time in the history of this institution that the same female crew receives the above award for the second time, since the golden girls had also received the Award in 2002.
At the ceremony held yesterday in Copenhagen, attended by more than 550 federation delegates from 50 countries, the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) awarded them this ultimate distinction, which is conferred every year to the world’s best sailors in recognition of their achievements.
Athletes from Great Britain, Australia, Norway and France were amongst the nominees for the “ISAF World Sailor Award of the Year 2004”.
Over the last 12 months, the Greek Gold Olympic Medallists have excelled in all big events for a 470 double-handed dinghy, such as the World Championship 2003, Athens Eurolymp in February 2004, Princess Sofia Trophy in April 2004 and the Athens Olympic Games.
On the occasion of the award conferred to the Greek athletes, the President of ISAF, Mr. Paul Henderson, stated: “Sofia and Emilia, through their achievements, over the last years have proven to be two world class sailors”.
