EFG Eurobank Ergasias announced today that, as part of its on-going sponsorship programme for Greek sports, it was renewing its cooperation with the Greek Basketball Federation for two more years, i.e. until the end of 2006.
EFG Eurobank Ergasias is the exclusive sponsor of all Greek national basketball teams from April 2001 until the end of 2004. The prolongation of the agreement until the end of 2006 confirms the Bank’s determination to continue to support the vision of athletes, managers and friends of Greek basketball in its journey to the pinnacles of achievement.Mr. Nicholas Nanopoulos, Chief Executive Officer of EFG Eurobank Ergasias, announced the agreement during a special event that took place in “Aigli” at the Zappeion Megaron. Representing the Bank were its President Mr. Xenofon Nikitas, Deputy Chief Executive Officers Mr. Nikolaos Karamouzis, General Managers and other executives of the Bank. Other participants included the President of FIBA Europe and member of the Board of Directors of the Greek Basketball Federation Mr. Giorgos Vassilakopoulos, the President of the Federation Mr. Andreas Miaoulis, Member of Parliament and Coach of the Greek National Men’s Basketball Team Mr. Yiannis Ioannidis, the captain of the Greek National Men’s team Mr. Giorgos Sigalas, athletes and representatives of Greek basketball.Referring to the renewal of the cooperation, Eurobank’s CEO Mr. Nicholas Nanopoulos pointed out that “culture, education and sports are the classic notions that determine the course of a society toward greater creativity and progress. During the past few years, Eurobank has chosen to steadily and imaginatively support certain efforts and initiatives in our society as they relate to the three areas of culture, education and, of course, sports. We strongly believe that a successful business organization must return, positively and creatively, some of its benefits to the society in which it operates and develops. In this vein, we respect and honour the tradition built by our principal shareholders, and in particular the Group’s founder, Ioannis Latsis.“We at Eurobank support efforts that aim at success and the attainment of high goals. As such, we will continue to support our basketball athletes’ continued efforts for ever-higher accomplishments. We began our sponsoring programme in 2001 and today we are announcing our commitment to extend it for two more years, at least until the end of 2006. I hope that in these two years Greek basketball will rise to international prominence”, said Mr. Nanopoulos. The President of FIBA Europe Mr. Giorgos Vassilakopoulos expressed his satisfaction for the “early” renewal of the cooperation between EFG Eurobank Ergasias and the Greek Basketball Federation. He also stressed that from 2000 to this day the Greek National Basketball Team and all the Greek national basketball teams had received from Eurobank the greatest support that can possibly be received from a sponsoring company, allowing the teams to smoothly fulfil their aims on the basketball courts. “Any successful cooperation is tested in the course of time, and today’s renewal of the agreement with EFG Eurobank Ergasias testifies to the truth of this”, he said. “The Greek National Basketball Team and Eurobank will go in the same direction, which is none other than the path of success for all Greek National Basketball Teams”.On behalf of the Greek Basketball Federation, President Andreas Miaoulis referred to the achievements of the Greek National Teams, whose present course, he stressed, entitled us to be optimistic about the future of the sport. “Besides its important history and distinguished present,” he added, “it will have a similar and, indeed, even more productive and successful future. Eurobank, the Sponsor of Greece’s National Teams, has contributed decisively to the progress of all our national teams and to the attainment of their competitive goals, and has enabled them to carry out their particularly costly programmes for preparation and active competition.”Member of Parliament and coach of the Greek National Men’s Team Mr. Yiannis Ioannidis spoke of the importance of sponsorship and of the standing cooperation with EFG Eurobank Ergasias. “The renewal of this cooperation, several months before the Olympic Games, proves that Eurobank is on the side of sports, education and culture, three inextricably-linked notions, three stepping-stones to our becoming better citizens. I am proud of our cooperation in the past years and whatever my position will be, we will continue to work together”, said Mr. Ioannidis.
Finally, in his short address the Captain of the Greek National Men’s Basketball Team Mr. G. Sigalas said that these four years of cooperation between Eurobank and the Greek National Basketball Team were very important. He added that all classes of basketball must make an even stronger effort in future to preserve the institution of sponsorship not only in Greek basketball but in Greek sports as a whole, and that this mainly depended on Greek athletes themselves and their achievements in the coming years.
