Aiming for the Gold Metal at the Athens Olympic Games

Each time they compete they gain the first place. They receive distinctions both in Greece and abroad. Their common path begins in 1997 and they continue to date making Greek people proud, bearing the title of Champions.

Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa make a formidable sailing team in Women 470’s Sailing. At the press conference organized today by their sponsor EFG Eurobank Ergasias, the international champions had a chance to address the media. Mr. George Andreadis, Vice President of the International Sailing Federation and Mr. George Alvertis, Managing Director of Eurobank Cards, also joined the press conference panel. «With the financial and moral support provided by our sponsor EFG Eurobank Ergasias, as well as the state support that we expect to receive, we aim for the gold metal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games », stressed the champions. Mr. G. Alvertis, representing the Bank, noted that EFG Eurobank Ergasias chose to support the efforts of athletes competing in track and field and sailing, as well as the efforts of all of the Greek national basket ball teams, because the Bank believes that these young people can win victories for Greece in view of the Olympic Games. Mr. George Andreadis, Vice President of the International Sailing Federation opened the press conference, praising the efforts of the champions and offering thanks to the sponsoring Bank. Born in 1977, Sofia Bekatorou, a student at Panteion University, is a member of the Sailing Club of Tzitzifies and Kallithea. Aimilia Tsoulfa was born in 1973, holds a degree in Physical Education from and is a member of the Piraeus Sailing Club. The team has won the Gold Metal in all of the international and pan-european championships it has participated from 2000 to date. Their recent ‘golden’ successes include the Eurolymp Week in Hyeres, France, in April 2002 and the SPA-Regatta in Medemblik, Holland in May. In the rest of 2002, the team will compete in leading events, such as:
  • 2002 ISAF World Sailing Games ,Marseilles, France from 29/6 to 11/7
  • 470 European Championship, Tallinn, Estonia, from 25/7 to 3/8
  • Athens 2002 Regatta (Test Event), Athens, Greece , from 16/8 to 25/8
  • 470 World Championship 2002, Cagliari, Sardinia , from 2/9 to 11/9
    It is everybody’s wish for the two girls to receive further recognition in their future difficult challenges and to step on the champion pedastel many more times.
