We apply a certified Energy Management System (ISO 50001) with the aim of reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction. We record and allocate energy consumption, to calculate our direct and indirect GHG emissions. This information helps us make the right decisions to limit the energy we use and minimise GHG emissions.
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
We adhere to the principles of the ISO 14064 standard for quantifying and reporting GHG emissions and removals. Based on this, greenhouse gas emissions are classified into 3 categories, also corresponding to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol:
- Direct GHG emissions (Scope 1) – Resulting from our natural gas and heating oil consumption, and the use of fuels for our vehicle fleet. This also includes data on fluorinated gases released from the Bank’s HVAC and fire suppression systems (fugitive emissions).
- Indirect GHG emissions (Scope 2) – Released due to electricity use.
- Indirect GHG emissions (Scope 3) – Related to business trips.
As of 2022, the Eurobank GHG emissions are verified by an independent certification body. In partnership with this body, we have certified our GHG emission reduction in 2022 according to the international ISO 14064 standard.
In 2022 we achieved a:
- 11.14% reduction in total GHG emissions.
- 6.50% reduction in total GHG emissions in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tC02e) per unit area of building.
- 8.69% reduction in total GHG emissions in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tC02e) per employee.
- 50.71% reduction in total GHG emissions intensity (tCO2e/million €).
Through significantly reducing the GHG emissions resulting from our operations, we play our part in climate change mitigation and contribute towards achieving the sustainable development goal on climate action (SDG13).
